Special Circumstances — Highway Hypnosis (Original Mix)

Special Circumstances presents his third exploration on Specious Music, entitled Colour Music.

The EP name is derived from the method composer Olivier Messiaen employed when approaching harmony, termed musique colorée. Colour Music utilises Messiaen’s Modes of Limited Transposition, a set of symmetrical scales that are structurally different to the major and minor scales (and associated modes) used in Western tonality. Special Circumstances employs these modes on each track of the release to paint vivid harmonic colours that break away from conventional harmony.

This tense yet vibrant harmonic system is lethal when combined with Special Circumstances’ penchant for polyrhythm and groove theory. Not simply an exercise in technical expression, the release is aimed squarely at the dancefloor, maintaining the pressure, bassweight and groove throughout its duration.
